Dr. med. Lutz Dörner ist seit 1999 neurochirurgisch tätig. Im Rahmen seiner Tätigkeit in den Kliniken für Neurochirurgie an der Medizinischen Hochschule und am Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein Campus Kiel hat er sich auf die Bereiche „Lokale Chemotherapie“, „Dynamische Stabilisierung“, „Chirurgische Schmerztherapie“ und die Tumorchirurgie spezialisiert. Durch Beteiligung und Leitung verschiedener nationaler und internationaler Studien können die Patienten davon ausgehen, ständig Informationen und Behandlungen nach dem aktuellen Wissensstand zu erhalten.
Die Ergebnisse der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wurden in vielen Publikationen in internationalen Fachzeitschriften und Buchbeiträgen veröffentlicht. Zusätzlich erfolgte eine Darstellung der Ergebnisse in unzähligen nationalen wie internationalen Vorträgen und Posterbeiträgen.
Die wissenschaftlichen Leistungen wurden durch verschieden Förderungen ausgezeichnet, u.a. des Congress of Neurological Surgeons (U.S.A.) und der Familie Mehdorn Stiftung.
